Listen It's Lifelong
Adoption's Story
Adoption Week Scotland 2023
Listen It’s Lifelong is brought to you by
the Scottish Adult Adoptee Movement
This year during Adoption Week Scotland 2023, we will hear the story of Adoption’s own evolution from pre-1926 legislation to current practices. By presenting a combination of research and narrative perspectives on history, alongside current action at home and abroad, the Scottish Adult Adoptee Movement is creating space for a new conversation. This conversation is needed to address the lifelong, profound complexities that Adoption places on Adoptees. As Scotland continues its work to “Keep The Promise”, we will explore together where Adoption has been, is now, and can be in the future. However Adoption evolves, it will be all the better for including the lived experience, the insight, and the clarity of viewpoint that non-dependant Adult Adoptees can bring.
On the 22nd of March 2023, the then first Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, gave a Sincere, Heartfelt and unreserved formal apology for the effects of historical forced adoption practices on mothers, their sons and daughters, fathers and families affected by forced Historical adoptions between 1945 and 1976.
this was quickly Followed in april 2023 by the welsh senedd’s Formal apology for the same practices.
meanwhile, the UK Government issued a statement (not an apology) claiming that the responsibility for historical forced adoption practices lay with the society of the time.
the truth of unrepresented generations of Adoptees have not yet been heard,
but the members of this generation are finding our voices.
there will be no silence on matters of injustice and the harm caused by any historic or present practices THAT are neither evidence-based nor oriented to the restoration, protection and promotion of human rights.
